Fancy a Unicorn

By Randy Cragin

By the side of the lake.
stretches a beach sunbaked...
Flowers stretch over hills and miles.
The wind blows their scents and smiles...

As the dawn's mist rises to her eyes.
truth born of sorrow full of basic lies...
As the sun grows blearing and bright.
The energy resounds the scene with a fistful of fright...

A sense of powerful thunder roars.
Across the creature filled moors...
Pain flashes into her skin from a roses thorn.
As the maiden waits upon the shore for her white and blue unicorn...

Hark!, cries the bird from the lighting flash.
She slowly drifts into dreams of decisions made rash...
Coward!, she thinks in her thoughts.
As she forgets to beckon what she has sought...

She is caught undressed in a powerful downpour.
She decides not to run regardless of the score...
She aches in pain and torment.
As she senses her greatest event...

Then suddenly she is freed in the light of a great rainbow.
Another sound has begun she awaits the final blow...
In a dash and dance of fury the unicorn angrily comes.
He appears into her view with sounds of distant drums...

Then she sees his horn all sparkling in gold.
Her future treachery long after will be told...
She began to sing her song the melody of her siren.
As the great white beast approaches her she touches him...

Angry is the dawn as her spell is cast.
The beauty of her maiden face is suddenly unmasked...
Her power is released and she appears as an ugly hag.
She grasps ahold of the horn and battles with the stag...

Vehement is her voice as she lashes out with curses.
All her evil spells are the words of treacherous verses...
Down comes the god as she stabs him with invisible spears.
No one came to reclaim all the lost unicorn tears...

The hag wrenches the horn free and now the beast is dead.
She raises her voice in rhymes holding the gold above her head...
With dreadful cries from nature with the power of the horn.
The spinster witch begins to transform...

Power is unleashed from every flower and blade of grass.
The witch grows in immortal strength and increases her vital mass...
The beginning of the ending of all her energies come along.
She's retched in her revenge and the weak become strong...

Frog and lizards, rat and snakes, become as big as dogs.
Men whom she considered no contest, now wear the faces of hogs...

She flies and she travels across great lands waving her gold wand.
And all the people she meets and dislikes are as good as gone...

Her army of mutant beast wage war with mankind.
The evil wicked queen swears she'll conquer them in time...
But she's long since forgotten the unicorn's name.
That word was her power that she used to tame...

Along comes a princess the unmoving beast she finds.
She fancies him alive and in his strength and prime...
But the beast never moves and many tears she's shed.
Then along comes a knight and absorbs the princess' dread...

She cries and she wails without the beast alive.
All of the world of man and kings cannot survive...
So this knight takes the quest to seek the beast regained.
And along with his search his name acquires fame...

The evil witch begins to catch a scent.
Of a great power which a righteous god has sent...
The knight dressed in blue, white, and glimmering gold.
Searches for this energy in form yet untold...

The Earth still quakes as this witches' war rages on.
While she her evil self searches as well for this magic that yet does not belong...
She and he meet in a quarry of many trees.
The witch uses her power and forces the knight to his knees...

But for the very first time in all of her horrible life.
She yet falls in love with him and wishes to be his wife...
the knight of blue, white, and gold even as he is held...
Breaks through her spell with his glorious voice.
And unleases god given magic and declines her by choice...

She rants and raves sputtering and uttering her curses.
But even as he discovers his gift he declines in beautiful verses...
She sings his songs back uttering undying love.

And from his hands he rises comes inspiration from above...

He says then show me your love and give me a precious gift.
And as he eyes her wand she senses what's adrift...
But she cursed with love more powerful then her evilest vain.
She then hands over the horn and screams in horrible pain...

Suddenly the great war ends and soldier find themselves slashing frogs and snakes.
The witch then kneels before her knight the ugly hag he then forsakes...
He spears her through the heart with ever the sharpest point.
As she dies at his feet her love for him in every joint...

The rest is as well as any other happy ending.
The unicorn is restored to life with the knight to forever defend him...
And as far as the princess goes she flutters and shudders in gratitude.
She, the knight, and the unicorn now live in a mystical latitude...
